The area of territories in Ukraine that may potentially be contaminated with explosive remnants of war has decreased by 17,000 sq. km in 2024, now totaling 139,000 sq. km. This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, as noted by UNN.

Details

According to Lieutenant General Ivan Havryliuk, the First Deputy Minister of Defense and First Deputy Chairman of the National Mine Action Authority, this achievement is the result of collaborative efforts between mine action operators and demining units of the Security and Defense Forces.

Throughout 2024, a total of 3,152.52 sq. km was surveyed, with more than 2,500 sq. km having been cleared of mines.

Moreover, as part of the implementation of the Humanitarian Demining Action Plan for de-occupied territories, non-technical surveys were conducted in 165 communities across seven regions in 2024, exceeding the planned target almost threefold. During this process, 2,291 sites of presumed or actual contaminated areas were identified, covering a total area of 302.9 sq. km.

Reminder

Almost 140,000 sq. km of Ukrainian territory requires demining, of which 35,500 sq. km has already been cleared. Over 4,000 sappers are engaged in demining efforts, and 50 partner countries have allocated more than $1 billion in assistance.
